About Me

I’m Nandan Kumar, a visual storyteller who creates films that are beautiful, meaningful, and emotive. Whether you need a documentary, a film, a web series, or a music video, I can help you tell your narrative with my honed creative skills in cinematography.

I am a self-taught Photographer and award-winning cinematographer with a unique journey, graduating in chemical engineering before teaching myself photography, videography, and color grading. I currently hold a postgraduate degree in cinematography from one of the most prestigious film schools in the country i.e. Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata, where I have worked on several award-winning short films. One of them, The Monkey That Tried to Tame an Oxygen Bomb, which I shot, has won an award at the Cinerama Film Festival, in India. I have also won a national recognition award at IFFI Goa, 2021 as “Creative Minds of Tomorrow”.

My artistic vision and professional identity are a product of inhabiting multiple spaces. Having taught myself cinematography at an engineering college before attending film school, and learning under the tutelage of industry professionals while studying at the film school has enabled me to benefit from and strive for an aesthetic approach that prioritizes inclusive collaboration. As a cinematographer and storyteller, I hope to harness the power of multiplicity to practice an innovative yet honest aesthetic that allows for issues of social justice to emerge with authenticity.

As a 21st-century cinematographer, I wish to challenge the conventional modes of understanding form, genre, and media. I aim to achieve this by committing myself to mixed media, which comprises working at the intersections of mainstream commercial cinema, digital media, and independent production efforts. This essentially requires deconstructing binaries between art and industry, between national and regional, and between global and local. To this end, I am excited by the prospect of synergizing with like-minded talent across barriers of race, language, and nationality.

Cinema is historically and culturally a powerful medium, and I hope to employ my learning and skills to further democratise the art form. In doing so, I also want to contribute to the trend of telling local stories that create a social impact of a global footprint. Narratives of equality and social justice are close to my heart. As a cinematographer and storyteller, I aim to practice an innovative yet honest aesthetic that allows these issues to emerge with authenticity and power.

WHAT DRIVES ME

My Philosophy

As a Cinematographer, I use visual storytelling to capture life through the lens and create images that speak and feel. Films can evolve and grow by introducing fresh perspectives and new techniques; observation, inspiration, and determination are the keys to success. I also value collaboration and communication with other creative professionals and clients and strive to deliver films that meet or exceed their standards and satisfaction.

To me, visual storytelling is like a meditation on whatever comes between life and death from the perspective of human existence.  It is my passion and my purpose.

Observation, inspiration, and determination are my foundation for success.
